On October 17th, 2025, Joana Margarida Dias Domingues successfully defended her PhD in Textile Engineering at the University of Minho, with the thesis entitled:

“Lignocellulosic-based polyelectrolyte complexes loaded with natural compounds against the most common pathogens colonizing diabetic foot ulcers.”

Her research focused on the development of bio-based nanomaterials and biopolymeric complexes, derived from lignocellulosic fibers, designed to deliver natural antimicrobial compounds that target the pathogens most frequently found in diabetic foot ulcers. This work contributes to the creation of sustainable biomaterials for wound healing and infection control, reinforcing the potential of natural compounds and fiber-based materials in advanced healthcare applications.

The PhD was supervised by Dr. Joana Antunes (Fibrenamics Association – Institute for Innovation in Fiber and Composites Materials), Dr. Helena Felgueiras (2C2T – Centre for Textile Science and Technology), and Dr. Maria Olívia Pereira (CEB – Centre of Biological Engineering, University of Minho).

The examination committee was chaired by Professor Dr. Raúl Fangueiro and included Dr. Eugénia Carvalho (University of Coimbra), Dr. Bruno Medronho (University of Algarve), Dr. Graça Soares (Department of Textile Engineering, University of Minho), and Dr. Helena Felgueiras (University of Minho).

This research represents a significant contribution to textile-based biomedical engineering, supporting the development of eco-friendly, bioactive, and functional materials for the next generation of healthcare and wound treatment solutions.

The Centre for Textile Science and Technology (2C2T) congratulates Dr. Joana Domingues for her outstanding achievement and for advancing scientific innovation in biomaterials, nanotechnology, and sustainable healthcare.
